Senator-islamophobe: hyped on tragedy — lost his seat?

Australian Senator Fraser Anning, who blamed the Christchurch mosque shootings… lost his seat in the recent national election. It is worth recalling that Anning’s statement immediately caused a storm of outrage in the country and led to a teenager egging him on the head.

His fringe party, called «Fraser Anning’s Conservative National Party,» failed to win even the insignificant number of votes that got him elected earlier, due to the sparsely populated nature of his constituency.

It is noteworthy that Anning managed to lose in the midst of the success of forces that, on the whole, hold anti-immigrant positions in the recent elections. Specifically, the Liberal-National coalition, which adheres to moderate nationalist views, emerged victorious.

However, even the most right-wing Australian party, Katter’s Australian Party, distanced itself from Anning as completely unbalanced due to his controversial statements.

It is therefore safe to say that the defeat of the Islamophobic former senator was not so much due to his anti-immigrant views, but rather to the unsavory reputation he acquired, largely due to his publicity surrounding the Christchurch bloodshed and the egg incident.
