Against the backdrop of an increase in arson attacks on military recruitment offices and other actions of real resistance in Russia, Alexei Navalny’s international team announced the restoration of its closed headquarters in Russia after being banned by the authorities. However, they began the restoration by conducting surveys of their supporters, including their home addresses, as if it were a normal public organization in a normal country, rather than the realities of totalitarianism and an organization recognized as extremist.
The question is, even in the best case scenario, what can Navalny’s headquarters do that cannot be done without them, and what benefit can they bring to the resistance? Partisan attacks are already being carried out by autonomous cells, the mobilization is being undermined by human rights activists, and the only thing Navalny’s headquarters is known for is taking people off the streets during protests and leading them to «smart voting,» which resulted in the election of the State Duma, which rubber-stamps Putin’s decisions on wars and annexations.
Therefore, it is likely that Navalny’s supporters have now decided to prepare to reap the fruits of the crisis and the discontent that will begin to grow against the backdrop of new defeats on the front lines and losses among the mobilized. It is also possible that someone within the Putin system is interested in this and understands that a change in its top leadership is inevitable, but wants it to happen as controlled as the «democratization» during Yeltsin’s time under the control of the second tier of the party-state apparatus and the Chekists. After all, Navalny himself talks about the fact that what Russia needs now is just a parliamentary republic, in which representatives of the current system who are dissatisfied with Putin’s policies will be able to find their place, but for now they remain silent.
And what about Muslims? We have been writing for many years that Navalny, Khodorkovsky and the like can be our tactical allies under certain circumstances, but they are definitely not our friends or strategic allies. Now the situation in the country and in the world has reached a point where Muslim peoples and territories must take their destiny into their own hands, strive for independence, and then engage with any power in Moscow, or whatever replaces it, on practical matters. Neither Navalny nor Khodorkovsky want this, nor do the overwhelming majority of Russian opposition politicians. But they may be forced to come to terms with this and engage with Muslims as equals, not as natives to be manipulated again, as Lenin and Yeltsin did, only to be oppressed again later. These mistakes must not be repeated.
Therefore, Navalny’s headquarters in Muslim regions must be sabotaged, and the activities they could and would carry out there should be carried out by the Muslims themselves. To this end, we urge active Muslims to organize themselves, take all precautions, choose their place in the resistance and define their goals. And in doing so, they should rely on Islamic political resources, starting with our own.
