Zionism in Western Politics: Retreating but Not Surrendering?

Recent events in Western politics indicate that the ideological influence of open Zionism is weakening for objective reasons, but its lobbyists do not want to accept this.

For example, the Voice of Islam has already reported on the scandal caused by the anti-Zionist statements of the newly elected congresswoman Ilhan Omar, who is considered the representative of Muslims in the American Democratic Party.

Muslims and those who support them on this issue perceive this story as an illustration of the power of the Zionist lobby and its established taboos in American politics, which prohibit criticism of Zionism and discussion of its influence on the US.

It is interesting to look at this story from the other side, especially in relation to the plans of the Democratic Party leadership to once again condemn «anti-Semitism».

Democratic leader Nancy Pelosi has initiated the preparation of a statement that will supposedly show the unwavering positions of the «friends of Israel» in this party.

However, as these «friends» themselves point out, this document is very vague, notably failing to condemn Omar and equating «anti-Semitism» with «other manifestations of racism and Islamophobia.

And against the backdrop of the hijab-wearing congresswoman’s anti-Israel statements, it is perceived by ultra-Zionists as an open mockery.

It is also noteworthy that Omar did not become an outcast in her own party after her remarks, but rather was seen by many as its spokesperson, or rather, its spokeswoman.

Opponents of the Democratic Party among Zionists, including Republicans such as Malik Dudakov, believe that this is due to objective reasons.

The party is becoming increasingly dependent on the votes of so-called «people of color», whose activists often act as defenders of Muslims, including from the Islamophobia of Donald Trump and his fellow party members.

On the other hand, the open alliance with Trump of obvious Zionists, of which Jared Kushner and his wife Ivanka Trump are only the tip of the iceberg, does not contribute to the sympathy for Israel and its friends among rank-and-file Democrats.

Of course, it is extremely important for the Democratic Party establishment to maintain the support of American Jewry, which means that no hint of anti-Semitism can be allowed within its ranks. Hence the official response to Omar’s remarks and her own apology.

However, the fact is that critical attitudes toward Israel are growing among young American Jews, which, together with the growing influence of the «people of color» electorate, allows anti-Zionists like Omar to be present in its leadership, something that was previously unimaginable.

Similar news recently came from France, where a scandal erupted when demonstrators at a protest rally «sent» journalist Alain Finkielkraut, known for his pro-Zionist positions and not just his Jewish surname, to Israel.

In response, the country’s president, Emmanuel Macron, introduced a bill that would make not only anti-Semitism a crime, but also anti-Zionism.

«We will not tolerate anti-Zionism, because it is a new form of anti-Semitism,» Macron said in this regard.

At the same time, unafraid of being labeled Islamophobic, he mentioned not only the extreme left and the extreme right as reasons for the growing anti-Zionism, but also «Islamists».

But if «Islamism» as an ideology can be criticized without equating it with Islam itself, why can’t Zionism as a specific ideology and policy be criticized by the same logic without equating it with Jews?

Meanwhile, as we wrote yesterday, the press secretary of Macron’s party, Aurora Berge, was among those harassed for an advertising campaign featuring running suits with hijabs, which is clearly an attack not on a political ideology but on the religious symbols of Islam.

How long can such double standards be maintained in France?

As can be seen from the mood of the French people participating in the protests, their attitudes may not change in a positive way for Muslims, but they tend to worsen for those who perceive attacks on Zionism as hostility against themselves.

Hence the reaction to such sentiments, both in the form of Macron’s bill and in the form of numerous statements by pro-Zionist politicians in the US.

In Britain, by the way, a group of former members of the Labor Party broke away from its ranks in Parliament and formed the Independent Group of MPs, protesting, among other things, the dominance of «anti-Semitism» in its ranks.

There are rumors that American Democratic congressmen, unhappy with politicians like Ilhan Omar in their ranks, may also break away or form their own caucus.

The evolution in this case is obvious — in the past, open critics of Zionism were forced to leave the mainstream parties. And now it is coming to the point where its ardent supporters will have to do the same…
